Notes

The problem of cultural evolution and social formation of Kerala has not been yet received a status of thrust area of  investigation. The basic drawback is that most of the writings are of  generalizations without any support  of authentic direct or indirect evidences collected from villages were exhaustive field work is necessary to correlate the historical observations. This author had taken up village studies in micro leval based on TOPONOMY in Calicut in 1975.Agood number of authors clearly pointed out that no sufficient sources are collected or no attempt had. been made by researchers to get the available sources. Historians like Dr.M.G.S.Narayanan, Dr.K.N.Ganesh, Dr.Rajan Gurukkal, Dr.M.R.Raghava varier; Prof A..Sreedhara menon and many others have opined that the collection of source materials regarding the early and medieval history and culture of Kerala is highly insufficient'. The remarks made by Dr.K.N.Panikker, another historian recently has made it clear that 'the writing of history without any basis has become the bane of out time: adding such history will mislead the future generations into baseless beliefs'. He continues "the peoples take over of the responsibility of recording the local history has become the need of the hour". This author  has adopted Participatory Research Appraisal Method/Sharing of Local Knowledge in 1978 by using questionnaire and field work.. At present the Govt. of Kerala has taken up a venture to write local history of 'villages on Panchayath basis, under the scheme village gazetteers.
